According to the NSBF report, "The Internet gives schools the opportunity to help narrow the gap between the haves and have-nots. Over-all, 70 percent of parents with incomes of $75,000 or more report that one or more of their children use the Internet, compared to 35 percent of parents with incomes less than $40,000. Fifty-seven percent of white parents report that their children use the Internet, compared to 23 percent of African-American parents." There are a number of initiatives underway intended to combat inequity in the context of computer networking and access to information and communication resources. One of the most visible efforts is the Digital Divide Network created by the Benton Foundation, in association with the National Urban League, According to the Network, "much is at stake, including: * whether individuals acquire the essential skills needed for success in today's job market; * whether disadvantaged communities obtain the tools that will enable them to thrive; and * ensuring that society benefits from the substantial contributions that diverse communities can make to our economy and culture.
