Subject: Welcome to the Final Chat with the Experts Posted By: Robin Kaczka Date: February 22, 1999 at 13:00:22 Welcome to the third and final “real-time” debate with the experts on the subject: “Should Textbooks be Replaced by Laptops?” Dr. Jack Christie and Mr. William L. Rukeyser are joining us online from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Central Time to respond to your comments and questions. Previous discussions have been engaging and informative. I'm sure this will be too! Dr. Jack Christie, former chairman of the Texas Board of Education, proposed that textbooks should be replaced by laptops. Dr. Christie has been involved with education for several years and firmly believes in the power of technology to provide benefits for students. Mr. William L. Rukeyser, coordinator of Learning in the Real World (http://www.realworld.org), is a noted technology skeptic. Mr. Rukeyser believes important questions must be raised before decisions are made about the investment by schools in technology. On February 25, 1999 Dr. Christie and Mr. Rukeyser will be facing off in person during the CoSN Fourth Annual Conference Town Hall Debate.
