Subject: Laptop vs. books

As an administrator I strongly feel that whether we think laptops are the future or not is irrelevant. It will eventually turn to this with the increase in use of technology and it's subsequent decrease in price. However, I have many disturbing questions and statement. One, I feel we'll need trained professionals to repair and keep these computers operational. The question of pay and additional teaher pay to offset what the computer tech coordinators are getting will be a huge issue. How else will you hire said individuals. Two, the need for 10-20% additional supply for breakdowns. This would also increase the overall costs. Three, books should not be altogether illiminated for use as reference in cases of breakdowns and electrical problems just to name two. I can see texts reduce to 1/10th of the normal order though. Of the three listed number one will be the biggest problem. Mayville State University in Mayville North Dakota (Laptop University) is already experiencing this by the turnover in Tech staff that is receiving major salary increases from the private sector. They currently are hoping they can raise starting salaries to combat the private sector but are seeing resistance from the legislature and current staff members who feel if the tech staff receives increases then they should as well. Either way difficult decisions ahead for all in education. I would love to discuss this topic with others if the opportunity arises. I've included my email address in this message in hopes that I can connect with other professionals on the topic.
